We founded Salvation Akita Rescue to provide extra support in the fight against homeless, surrendered, abandoned, and abused Akitas dogs. We believe this battle starts with the education of the public. This breed can be your greatest friend, if you are willing to train yourself to understand them. Are you up for a challenge?

Our Akitas are mainly found in shelters although we are also able to be a resource for owner surrenders as well. Notification of an Akita in need requires a network of people. This can be you! Requirement for this task is recognition of the breed and getting in contact with a breed specific rescue. Why do they need a breed specific environment?

With the diverse amounts of dogs in shelters the Akita can be misinterpreted. Breed characteristics may be overlooked while assessing and placing these dogs in homes. Specifically same sex dog aggression or aggression in general can lead to unfortunate outcomes when placed in the wrong homes. This failure to recognize need can result in a constant cycle (surrender, placement, return). Not all owners can go home with this incredibly powerful, smart, strong-willed dog, but we are dedicated to matching each individual akita with the right owner. We are here to try to make each placement a permanent home.

Another reason to contact a breed specific rescue is simply to get them out of a high kill shelter situation. Sadly, many dogs brought to shelters are euthanized even though they are great candidates for finding homes. During the initial assessment a volunteer will be looking for indications that would make them a prospect for rehabilitation and placement.

Medical Treatment is provided for all Akitas in our care. They will be seen within 24hr of transfer to one of our foster locations. From the moment they are seen we create a health plan with our veterinarian.

Not all of rehabilitation is medical, some Akitas in need have some sort of temperament issues that need to be addressed. Some are in need of serious R&R (Rest and Recuperation) to fully become the adored pet ready for adoption!

We are vigilant and meticulous when it comes to our home placements. We cannot stress enough that the correct match can make or break an owner. Akitas come with their own custom personality. When filling out our application we ask you to be as honest and genuine as possible. Depending on your energy level and activities you like will be extremely helpful in finding a good match for you and or family.

After the Akita is placed, we continue to be an asset as we are here to help with any Akita questions and concerns that arise. Knowledge will be your biggest asset! The more you learn and get to understand this breed, the deeper the bond will be when you finally bring home this amazing animal.
